About Founded in 2019 and led by Victoria L. Awkward, VLA DANCE is a performance-based Contemporary Dance company based out of Roxbury’s Hibernian Hall. We aim to create pathways to Freedom for people of all identities through contemporary dance.
VLA DANCE is a growing company enlivened by our vision for the future:
A contemporary dance company that trains rigorously and produces thought-provoking performances, where the artists involved are paid salaries with benefits for their work
An educational base for advanced and professional dancers to continue their contemporary dance training
A touchstone for the Boston & Greater Boston community, where people of all dance relationships can revel in the joy of dance through classes, performances, journals, and other immersive experiences
We believe that all of this can exist while upholding our values: bringing together racially diverse artists, respecting body images, holding space for a fluidity of gender identities, providing transparency in communication, upholding ethical company practices, and valuing each company member as an integral part to the whole.
