Summer Movement Series adult program features: Masterclass Monday a rotating schedule featuring classes such as, AfroCuban Folklore (Yoruba) / Orisha Dance Technique, Urban Choreography, Ballet and more! Workshop Wednesday features contemporary dance classes exploring VLA DANCE movement philosophies. On both Mondays and Wednesdays we are offering Yoga for movers of all experiences.
Classes are held in person at Hibernian Hall. Yoga will be both in person and virtual. Classes are open to individuals of all identities. Please read the class descriptions and take in account the class level to self select classes you are interested in participating in.

YOUTH PROGRAM
This summer join the VLA DANCE Youth Dance Cohort with Sarah Pacheco and Key'Aira Lockett for an artistic excursion through dance and creative research! Take class in modern dance, choreography, hip-hop, and creative expression. Youth Dance Cohort is held July 12 - August 11 Mondays and Wednesdays 1 - 4 PM and is free!

Youth must be ages 13 - 17.

Caribbean Fem Class creates a safe space for women and female identifying to explore and enjoy their femininity. With focus on concepts/fundamentals from dancehall, wining, and other Caribbean dance influences, dancers will enhance their knowledge and quality of movement through their feminine essence. Class is ages 14+

My'Kal Stromile

My’Kal Stromile’s advanced ballet class is centered around the basics of classical training, including but not limited to; alignment, strength, coordination, and control. In addition to fundamentals, the class focuses on the use of the head, movement artistry and individual expression. The class incorporates themes from visionaries, George Balanchine and William Forsythe—related to musical timing, dynamics and syncopation.

AfroCuban Folklore (Yoruba)/ Orisha Dance Technique
MONDAY 8/9

AfroCuban Folklore (Yoruba) / Orisha Dance or Folklore (Yoruba) AfroCubano, is a dance tradition of the Regla de Ocha-Ifá spiritual-religious practice. This class will provide and guide movers through gaining a strong understanding and technical skill of the dances and rhythms of the Orishas to the complex Batá percussion rhythms, as well as Güiro and Iyesá rhythms. Through the AfroCuban rhythms of the Yoruba/Lukumí practice, this course aims to connect the body to movements of the Afrikan influences and traditions of Cuba and the Orishas. Aché!
